What usually goes wrong
The thin 7mm drives have very small heads that are easily damaged. Several models (such as ST1000LM035 and ST2000LM015) use SMR recording, so a firmware fault can make them look empty until the translator is rebuilt with PC-3000.
If your ST500LM030 is clicking, beeping or not spinning, switch it off. Every restart can damage the platters further. Don’t open it and don’t run recovery software on it.
How we recover the ST500LM030
We use PC-3000 systems from ACE Lab, the professional standard for data recovery labs. PC-3000 lets us repair a drive’s firmware through its service area, read damaged drives one head at a time, and copy weak drives slowly and safely without stressing them. Physical repairs such as replacing read/write heads are done in our clean room in central London, so the drive never leaves our lab.
We always work on a copy of the drive, never the original, and you get a list of recovered files to check before you pay for the recovery.
