SSD recovery: SATA, M.2 and NVMe

SSDs fail without warning. One day the computer starts; the next, the drive has disappeared, shows a strange name, or reports a tiny capacity. That’s usually a firmware or controller fault, and the data is often still there.

Signs your SSD needs a lab

  • Not detected in the BIOS or in Disk Management
  • Shows the wrong size, such as 0 MB or 2 MB
  • Appears with a factory or controller name instead of its model
  • Became read-only, or stopped working after a firmware update
  • Laptop or desktop stopped booting with “no bootable device”

Why SSDs are different

An SSD spreads your files across its memory chips in its own way and keeps track of them in a translation table inside the controller. When that table or the firmware is damaged, the drive can’t present any data, even though the chips are fine. Recovery means repairing or emulating the controller so the data can be read back in the right order.

Time matters with SSDs. Many SSDs erase deleted blocks automatically in the background (TRIM). If you’ve deleted files from an SSD, switch the computer off now. Every minute it stays on lowers the chance of getting them back.
