JBOD & spanned volume recovery
JBOD ("just a bunch of disks") joins several disks into one big volume with no redundancy, so when one disk fails the whole volume goes.
What we recover
JBOD ("just a bunch of disks") joins several disks into one big volume with no redundancy, so when one disk fails the whole volume goes. Files that sat on the healthy disks are usually fully recoverable, and with clean-room work on the failed disk we can often get the rest. We rebuild the order of the disks and the volume map from images.
Models
JBOD enclosures, Windows spanned volumes and Storage Spaces, Linux LVM, macOS concatenated sets, DAS units in "single" or "large" mode, and every other JBOD model.
How we do it
We use PC-3000 systems from ACE Lab, the professional standard for data recovery labs. PC-3000 lets us repair a drive’s firmware through its service area, read damaged drives one head at a time, and copy weak drives slowly and safely without stressing them. Physical repairs such as replacing read/write heads are done in our clean room in central London, so the drive never leaves our lab.
Each disk is imaged with PC-3000 first; any failed disk is repaired in the clean room. The volume is then rebuilt from the copies, so your original disks are never written to.
Before you send it: power the unit down, don’t initialise, repair or re-create anything, and label each disk with its bay number.
