What usually goes wrong
Probably the drive family we see most. The 3TB ST3000DM001 had a high failure rate, and all of them commonly suffer head failures and firmware "translator" faults that make the drive show the wrong size or not appear at all. Both are standard PC-3000 and clean-room jobs.
If your ST1000DM003 is clicking, beeping or not spinning, switch it off. Every restart can damage the platters further. Don’t open it and don’t run recovery software on it.
How we recover the ST1000DM003
We use PC-3000 systems from ACE Lab, the professional standard for data recovery labs. PC-3000 lets us repair a drive’s firmware through its service area, read damaged drives one head at a time, and copy weak drives slowly and safely without stressing them. Physical repairs such as replacing read/write heads are done in our clean room in central London, so the drive never leaves our lab.
We always work on a copy of the drive, never the original, and you get a list of recovered files to check before you pay for the recovery.
