Faults we see on the Seagate BarraCuda (ST…DM004 to DM010)
Several of these drives (including ST2000DM008, ST4000DM004 and ST8000DM004) use shingled recording (SMR), which stores data in overlapping tracks and keeps a complex map of where everything is. When that map is damaged, the drive can look empty or very slow. Recovery needs the map rebuilt, which is specialist PC-3000 work.
How we recover it
We use PC-3000 systems from ACE Lab, the professional standard for data recovery labs. PC-3000 lets us repair a drive’s firmware through its service area, read damaged drives one head at a time, and copy weak drives slowly and safely without stressing them. Physical repairs such as replacing read/write heads are done in our clean room in central London, so the drive never leaves our lab.
