What usually goes wrong
Many 7200.7 drives are IDE (PATA), so they need an IDE connection that modern PCs no longer have. Common faults are failed read/write heads after a knock, and electronics damaged by a power surge.
If your ST3120026A is clicking, beeping or not spinning, switch it off. Every restart can damage the platters further. Don’t open it and don’t run recovery software on it.
How we recover the ST3120026A
We use PC-3000 systems from ACE Lab, the professional standard for data recovery labs. PC-3000 lets us repair a drive’s firmware through its service area, read damaged drives one head at a time, and copy weak drives slowly and safely without stressing them. Physical repairs such as replacing read/write heads are done in our clean room in central London, so the drive never leaves our lab.
We always work on a copy of the drive, never the original, and you get a list of recovered files to check before you pay for the recovery.
